The story of the Garden Cottage
The sweetest stone cottage for two in the peaceful hamlet of Ganthorpe; come for long walks and lazy evenings, country houses and a thriving foodie scene
Settle down in a tiny Yorkshire hamlet on the fringe of the Howardian Hills AONB and location for visiting Castle Howard. Originally the gardener’s cottage, Garden Cottage is attached to Ganthorpe Hall, our family home, but you get a private entrance and pretty garden. Stride straight out into rural landscapes with your dog then return to hunker in front of the glowing wood-burner.
We have spent a lot of time renovating the cottage and as an artist, I have used my creative eye to fill the space with antique finds, warm lighting, colourful textiles and local art, including paintings by my grandfather Lawrence Toynbee. This is a generous sort of place: arrive to find the fire lit, help yourself to veggies from our garden, get recommendations for good places to eat and things to do.
You will find the cottage has been accepted by the travel company Sawday’s which we hope will give you reassurance of the quality and feel of Garden Cottage.
It’s a stroll or short drive to the nearest village shop in Terrington, visit Malton and Helmsley for smart delis, bourgie gift shops, a gin distillery and a Saturday market. York is lovely for a day out. And the coast is a short drive away with many different beaches on offer.
